Reporting to the Engineering Manager, the Designer, Castings role offers the opportunity to contribute to innovative structural solutions while developing real‑world experience. Duties & Responsibilities
- Collaborate with the sales team to develop new and exciting component designs to address clients’ architectural and structural needs
- Interpret construction documents: extract relevant information such as load conditions, material properties, frame geometries, and connecting member sizes
- Create casting models: create 3‑dimensional design and modelling in SolidWorks considering factors such as shape, weight, castability etc.
- Prepare shop drawings: produce as‑cast and machined shop drawings based on 3D models created
- Perform code‑based calculations: follow the relevant steel design codes and standards, such as CSA S16 and AISC 360, to perform code‑based calculation checks on casting components
- Conduct finite element analysis: evaluate stress and strain distribution within the component body using finite element analysis tool
Technical Capabilities
- Outlook, Microsoft Office Suite, Microsoft Teams
- Familiarity with 3D modelling software (e.g., SolidWorks, Hyperworks) is considered an asset, but not a requirement
Education and Experience
- Requires a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering
- Relevant academic courses include: solid mechanics, steel design, concrete design, and dynamics
- Good understanding of structural design basis for concrete, steel and wood
- Knowledge of CSA standards
