Welcome to Volunteering with British Red Cross Retail. Thank you for your interest in joining us as part of the Big Help Out. We’re pleased to welcome you into our shop to get a feel for what volunteering with British Red Cross Retail could look like. Participants must be aged 18 or over to take part in this event. This is a great opportunity to come and try things out, meet our teams, and see whether volunteering in one of our shops is something you might enjoy doing more regularly in the future — there’s absolutely no pressure either way.

What you’ll experience on the day

When you arrive, you’ll be greeted by one of our friendly team members, who will welcome you into the shop. We’ll start with a short tour, during which we’ll highlight key areas of the shop and cover important health and safety information such as fire exits. You will then be supported to try out a range of typical shop tasks:

  • Sorting donations
  • Steaming
  • Ticketing
  • Merchandising

Over a two-hour slot, you’ll have the chance to rotate across different activities, so you can see what suits you best and get a real feel for the variety involved in volunteering with us.

Inclusion and support

We are keen to make volunteering inclusive and welcoming for everyone. If you have any specific support requirements or adjustments that would help you get the most out of your time with us, please feel free to reach out to the shop manager in advance, or have a quiet chat with the team on the day. We’ll always do our best to support you.

Meet the team & ask questions

Throughout your time with us, you’ll be working alongside our volunteers and colleagues, giving you the chance to meet the team, ask questions, and hear about their own volunteering experiences. You’re very welcome to join us just for the two-hour session – or, if you find you enjoy it, you can chat to the team on the day about volunteering more regularly with us in the future.

Why we want you

This opportunity is ideal if you want to give your time without committing long-term, whatever the reason. Flexible, accessible, and open to everyone, it’s a simple way to make a meaningful difference. Bite-size volunteering is designed to be flexible and easy; you choose tasks that fit around you and match your skills or interests. Every task, no matter how small, helps the British Red Cross and the communities we work in. You’ll see how your contribution makes a real difference. This approach allows you to volunteer in a way that works for you; it’s quick, meaningful, and rewarding.

What you will be doing

Completing short tasks that will benefit the British Red Cross and the communities we serve (examples could include helping with events, sharing information, or supporting a team with quick activities). Tasks vary by service or team, but all are designed to be short and easy to fit into your schedule. Clear instructions will be provided so you know exactly what to do and how to do it safely. This role is hybrid; some tasks can be done from home, others in an office, and some at specific locations for events. You choose the tasks that work best for you. During your volunteering, you will follow the British Red Cross’ Code of Conduct and Mutual Expectations. These help us work together respectfully, safely, and in line with our values.
