The Company

We are partnered with a UK-based association that represents the interests of its members in protecting and enhancing the rights of music publishers and creators. It works to promote copyright awareness, advocate for fair industry standards, and support the value of musical works across the creative and commercial sectors. The association also provides educational resources, legal guidance, and networking opportunities for its members within the music industry.

The Role

We are seeking a sole/lead counsel providing commercial legal, corporate governance, business affairs and public affairs support to the group. The General Counsel will be handling all legal, governance and compliance issues across group companies, assisting with the legal aspects of public policy submissions, and general legal work.

Key Responsibilities

  • Negotiation, drafting and review of the full range of commercial agreements
  • Staying abreast of copyright, IP and media law and advising on relevant issues
  • Managing relationships with external counsel and advisers
  • Advise upon and maintain compliance with company/corporate law and other relevant legislation and standards
  • Working alongside the Chief Policy and Public Affairs Officer and Copyright Consultant to monitor legislative, regulatory, parliamentary and industry developments in the UK, and worldwide to help ensure that all parties remain well informed of all developments affecting the sector and formulate policy positions

The Candidate

At least 7 years post qualified experience (PQE) highly desirable, copyright (IP), or commercial experience, corporate law with excellent drafting skills. Excellent legal and written and verbal communication skills. Must be able to work on own initiative, disciplined, organised and act as a positive self motivated team player. A positive team player with a proactive creative and solutions orientated approach. Experience working in or with collection societies and on international business, or a music publisher would be an added advantage.
