About The Role

Reporting to the Chief Financial Officer, the Working Capital Manager will head a team of twenty‑seven staff based across London, Cardiff and Belfast. The role is responsible for all aspects of the firm’s billing, e‑billing and credit control, including the overseas offices. It is a heavily project‑based position aimed at driving the firm’s aspiration to become a tech‑enabled law firm.

Key Responsibilities

• Take responsibility for the firm’s Working Capital Management and drive initiatives to reduce lock‑up, including end‑to‑end billing and credit control processes.
• Ensure the team establishes strong working relationships with partners through regular review meetings, maintaining focus on timely billing and debt collection to meet agreed targets and timetables.
• Chair the Finance Committee, which meets monthly to review exposure, set credit limits and evaluate process changes affecting working capital management.
• Serve as a member of the Data Governance Committee, meeting quarterly to review data compliance and risk implications.
• Establish regular billing patterns and, where possible, monthly billing cycles, while observing any special billing arrangements.
• Maximise use of the firm’s e‑billing hub and ensure adherence to e‑billing policies.
• Collaborate with the external debt collection agency to recover problematic debt.
• Accept operational ownership, find practical solutions, and escalation problems appropriately, liaising with the finance systems team.
• Participate in quarterly reporting routines, reporting progress against strategic objectives and lock‑up targets.
• Set charge‑out rates, leading annual reviews and rate history reviews.
• Manage all aspects of team management, including appraisals, recruitment and encouraging development, supported by the Credit Control Manager, Billing Manager and e‑billing Manager.

Current Projects

• Review of the firm’s billing workflow, rolled out in October 2021, with a cyclical change review process.
• E‑Billing Hub review and system integration.
• Establishing alternative billing approaches for non‑standard service items.
• Review of rate structures to achieve a consistent firm‑wide approach.
• Enhancement and simplification of reports used for lock‑up and broader financial management decisions.

Future Projects

• Review of Elites credit control module alongside alternative market solutions to optimise the credit control process.
• Review of the New Joiner training for Finance across Partners, Fee Earners and Business Services teams.
