Location: Ipswich, Suffolk

Salary: £46,803 – £53,919 per annum + market forces payment of up to £4,383 pro rata

Hours: 35 hours per week, 52 weeks per year

Contract: Permanent

Working pattern: On-site, with travel between campuses

Are you an experienced Plumbing & Heating professional and educational leader looking for your next challenge? We are delighted to be supporting a leading further education provider in Suffolk with the appointment of a Head of Plumbing & Heating to lead and develop its Plumbing & Heating curriculum. This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced technical professional and educational leader to take strategic and operational responsibility for programmes spanning Entry Level through to Level 3, apprenticeships and adult learning. You’ll lead a team of teaching and support staff, develop strong relationships with employers and industry partners, and ensure learners receive an outstanding experience while achieving the skills and qualifications they need to progress into successful careers.

The Role

  • Lead and develop the Plumbing & Heating curriculum, including Entry Level, Level 1–3, apprenticeships and adult programmes
  • Lead, motivate and develop a high-performing team, including recruitment, performance reviews, lesson observations and target setting
  • Take responsibility for learner and apprentice progress, achievement, attendance and overall experience
  • Oversee assessment, internal verification and external verification processes, ensuring compliance with awarding organisation requirements
  • Ensure staff training, registrations and professional requirements remain up to date
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with employers, industry partners, SMEs and professional organisations
  • Identify opportunities to develop new curriculum provision and commercial training in response to industry and employer needs
  • Monitor curriculum performance and learner data, taking action where required to improve outcomes
  • Lead curriculum planning, timetabling and day-to-day delivery
  • Contribute to self-assessment and quality improvement processes
  • Manage relevant budgets and commercial activity within the curriculum area
  • Work closely with technicians to ensure workshops are safe, compliant, well-equipped and industry relevant
  • Support promotional activity including open events, school engagement and industry events
  • Work collaboratively with internal teams to support the successful completion of apprenticeships
  • Maintain strong relationships with awarding organisations and external education partners
  • Ensure effective safeguarding, health & safety and compliance across the area
  • Contribute to the wider management and strategic direction of the Engineering, Construction and Building Technology Directorate
  • Undertake some teaching across relevant Plumbing & Heating programmes

About You

We’re looking for an inspirational and forward-thinking leader who combines strong Plumbing & Heating industry knowledge with excellent educational and people-management skills. You will ideally have:

  • Professional experience within the Plumbing & Heating sector
  • Experience of teaching, training, assessing, mentoring and/or coaching
  • Experience of curriculum management and leading high-performing teams
  • Experience working with apprenticeships and/or adult learning
  • A strong understanding of teaching, learning and assessment
  • Knowledge of current Plumbing & Heating industry standards, trends and technologies
  • Experience managing learner performance, including attendance, progress and achievement
  • Excellent communication and relationship-building skills
  • Strong planning, organisational and time-management abilities
  • Experience of using data to inform decision-making and drive improvement
  • Experience of budget and change management
  • A proactive, solution-focused approach with the ability to make effective decisions

Qualifications

You will be expected to hold:

  • A relevant degree or professional qualification
  • A recognised Level 5 teaching qualification
  • Maths and English to Level 2 (GCSE grade C/4 or equivalent)
  • Membership of a relevant professional organisation such as CIPHE, BPEC or City & Guilds would be advantageous.
  • Additional qualifications in management, coaching, assessing or internal quality assurance would also be beneficial.
