The Role

We are looking for an experienced Transport Planner to join a busy transport and logistics operation. This is a hands-on role responsible for planning and coordinating daily deliveries through a network of approved subcontracted transport providers. Working closely with customers, warehouse teams, sales colleagues and transport providers, you will ensure deliveries are planned efficiently, customer requirements are met and any operational issues are resolved quickly. Key Responsibilities

  • Plan and optimise daily delivery schedules to ensure efficient and cost-effective transport operations.
  • Allocate work across a network of subcontracted transport providers.
  • Maximise vehicle utilisation while maintaining excellent customer service levels.
  • Monitor deliveries and respond quickly to delays, changes and customer requirements.
  • Re-plan routes and deliveries where necessary to minimise disruption.
  • Liaise with subcontracted hauliers regarding daily deliveries and collections.
  • Clearly communicate delivery instructions, customer requirements and site restrictions.
  • Monitor carrier performance and escalate issues where appropriate.
  • Provide customers with delivery updates and manage transport enquiries.
  • Work closely with Sales and Warehouse teams to coordinate deliveries and loading requirements.
  • Ensure transport documentation is completed accurately.
  • Manage Proof of Delivery (POD) documentation and investigate outstanding queries.
  • Maintain accurate transport records, planning systems and operational documentation.
  • Produce reports and operational information as required.
  • Identify opportunities to improve transport efficiency, processes and customer service.

About You

We are looking for someone with:

  • Previous experience as a Transport Planner or Logistics Planner.
  • Experience working with subcontracted carriers or third-party transport providers.
  • Strong route planning and scheduling experience.
  • Experience using a Transport Management System (TMS) or route planning software.
  • Experience working in a fast-paced transport or logistics environment.
  • Experience managing Proof of Delivery (POD) processes.
  • Good geographical knowledge.
  • Excellent planning, organisational and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • The ability to prioritise competing demands and make confident decisions under pressure.
  • Good commercial awareness, with the ability to balance customer service and transport costs.
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Competence using Microsoft Office applications.

Desirable Experience

It would be advantageous if you have experience within:

  • Construction materials
  • Manufacturing
  • Industrial distribution
  • Integrated transport planning systems
