We have an exciting opportunity to join our team at Cartwheel Coffee Roasters in Nottingham as our new Head Roaster & Production Manager

Cartwheel is a modern, quality-focused roastery with a sourcing approach built on transparency, provenance, and long-term relationships. We roast for our own cafés as well as many of the best independent coffee shops and businesses across the UK.

We’re looking for someone who is detail-orientated, technically capable, and process-driven, with a passion for high-quality coffee and for managing smooth, efficient production. This role places a strong emphasis on roasting and production oversight while also supporting the broader roastery operation.

You’ll work closely with our team to ensure roasting quality, production consistency, and timely fulfilment of wholesale, subscription, and retail orders.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead day-to-day roasting, ensuring consistent quality across all coffees.
  • Create and refine roast profiles for new coffees.
  • Carry out QC and cuppings, monitoring both green and roasted coffee quality.
  • Oversee production workflows — packing, labelling, dispatch — to ensure efficiency and accuracy.
  • Manage inventory and ordering for green coffee, roasted coffee, packaging, and consumables.
  • Maintain cleaning, maintenance, and H&S protocols in the roastery.
  • Train and support the roasting/production team (e.g. assistants, packers, drivers).
  • Plan production schedules around wholesale and subscription demand.
  • Hands-on roasting, packing, and dispatch as needed.
  • Maintain product collateral (taste cards, website updates, print orders) in collaboration with the wider team.
  • Ensure roastery SOPs, documentation, and training materials are accurate and regularly updated.

What We’re Looking For

  • Experience roasting specialty coffee at scale (Probat or similar preferred, but not essential).
  • Strong understanding of green coffee quality and roasting theory.
  • Experience managing production workflows— able to coordinate multiple processes.
  • Good organisational skills with strong attention to detail.
  • A collaborative, practical approach — willing to roll sleeves up when needed.
  • Passion for specialty coffee and Cartwheel’s values of quality and transparency.

Salary & Benefits

  • Salary: £29–36k per annum, dependent on experience.
  • Staff benefits include free coffee, discounts, professional development
  • Opportunities for growth within a fast-developing independent coffee roasting business.
