As a Mechanical Design Engineer, you will play a key role in the design and development of bespoke special-purpose machinery and robotic systems, working from initial concept through to final build. This is a hands-on, project-driven role where you will be responsible for creating innovative automation solutions tailored to customer requirements. You will be heavily involved in designing robotic automation systems, including pick-and-place solutions, and integrated manufacturing cells.
Typical projects include fully automated assembly machines incorporating robotics, pneumatic and hydraulic systems, and vision inspection, as well as complex inspection and production systems used across industries such as pharmaceutical, automotive, and general engineering.
Key Responsibilities- Design bespoke special-purpose machinery and robotic systems from concept to completion
- Develop automated solutions, including robotics, pneumatics, and vision systems
- Work on multiple projects simultaneously, managing design timelines and priorities
- Interpret and review customer specifications, proposing innovative and cost-effective solutions
- Collaborate closely with internal teams, including build and assembly, with a willingness to get hands-on where required
- Ensure designs are practical, manufacturable, and aligned with project deadlines
- Proven background in mechanical design (BEng, HND, HNC, or apprenticeship route)
- Strong experience designing bespoke machinery for customer-driven projects
- Demonstrable experience in robotic systems design and automation
- Experience with vision inspection systems and automated machinery
- Proficient in SolidWorks (preferred)
- Ability to think creatively and develop innovative engineering solutions
- Experience managing multiple concurrent design projects
- Strong teamwork skills with the ability to work independently when required
- Practical, hands-on approach to engineering
- Experience in designing any of the following will be highly advantageous:
- Robotic systems and pick & place automation
- Automated assembly machinery
- Vision inspection systems
- Packaging and end-of-line systems
- Warehouse automation or material handling systems
