Are you looking for a maintenance-focused engineering role where your expertise makes a real difference to public buildings? Do you enjoy diagnosing mechanical failures and getting to the root cause of problems? Carrington West are working with Derby City Council to find a Senior Mechanical Engineer (Reactive Maintenance) on an initial 6-month contract. This role is firmly focused on reactive maintenance and fault diagnosis, supporting council-owned buildings across Derby, including schools.

You will act as the technical lead when systems fail, identifying causes, specifying remedial works and ensuring safe, compliant outcomes.

The role includes:

  • Diagnosing mechanical and heating system failures across council buildings
  • Attending site, investigating faults and producing clear defect and condition reports
  • Raising and managing work orders via the maintenance portal
  • Providing mechanical and heating design input where required
  • Supervising contractors and inspecting works for quality and compliance
  • Advising schools and stakeholders on maintenance priorities
  • Ensuring compliance with health & safety and energy efficiency standards

You will be site-based in Derby around 3 days per week.

About you:

  • Strong background in mechanical & heating maintenance
  • Proven experience in reactive maintenance and fault diagnosis
  • Previous "on the tools" experience highly desirable
  • Gas certification and recognised mechanical qualification (e.g. NVQ Level 7, BTEC HNC/HND or similar)
  • Confident producing technical reports and making engineering decisions

  • Contract: Initial 6 months
  • Hours: 37 per week
  • Rate: Β£46.40 per hour (Inside IR35 - Umbrella)
