Are you an experienced Process Engineer within the water sector looking to take on greater technical responsibility while continuing to develop your career? I am currently recruiting on behalf of a major infrastructure organisation delivering a significant pipeline of clean water, wastewater, treatment, pumping station and network projects across the East of England. This organisation is looking for a Senior Process Engineer who can provide technical leadership across process design, support projects through design and construction, and help develop engineers within the wider team. The role would suit someone who enjoys remaining technically involved while taking greater responsibility for design quality, engineering decisions and supporting other members of the team.

The Role

As Senior Process Engineer, you will take a lead role across the process engineering elements of a range of capital infrastructure projects. You will work alongside multidisciplinary engineering, project management, construction and supply chain teams, helping ensure designs are technically robust, practical to construct and delivered in line with programme, cost and quality requirements.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Leading and reviewing process design activities across water and wastewater infrastructure projects.
  • Reviewing mass balances, process sizing, hydraulic calculations, P&IDs and process flow diagrams.
  • Checking technical calculations, drawings and design documentation prior to issue.
  • Providing technical guidance and support to Process Engineers and other members of the design team.
  • Responding to design queries and change requests arising during construction.
  • Working closely with Project Design Managers to plan design activities and achieve technical acceptance.
  • Reviewing supplier designs, specifications and technical submissions.
  • Supporting the selection and specification of process equipment.
  • Ensuring process designs comply with relevant engineering standards, environmental requirements and regulations.
  • Supporting and participating in HAZOP, DSEAR and wider process safety reviews.
  • Identifying opportunities to improve design efficiency, sustainability and whole-life carbon performance.
  • Supporting the development and mentoring of junior engineers.
  • Working collaboratively with construction teams to ensure designs are practical and buildable.
  • Contributing to technical standards, engineering forums and continuous improvement initiatives.

This organisation is particularly interested in speaking with Process Engineers who already have experience within the water or wastewater industry and are ready to take the next step in their career.

Ideally, you will have:

  • A degree in Chemical Engineering, Process Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering discipline.
  • Previous experience delivering process design within the water sector.
  • Experience working on water treatment, wastewater treatment, pumping stations, networks or associated infrastructure.
  • A strong understanding of process calculations, hydraulic design and process equipment.
  • Experience producing or reviewing P&IDs and process flow diagrams.
  • Knowledge of relevant engineering standards, environmental regulations and process safety requirements.
  • The confidence to review and challenge engineering designs where required.
  • Experience supporting or mentoring less experienced engineers.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively with multidisciplinary teams.
  • Chartered Engineer status, or a desire to work towards professional chartership.
  • Experience within a Design & Build environment would be beneficial, although it is not essential.

Projects

Depending on your experience and interests, you could work across a varied programme including:

  • Water treatment facilities
  • Water recycling and wastewater treatment centres
  • Pumping stations
  • Rising and gravity mains
  • Clean water distribution networks
  • Sewerage infrastructure
  • Hydraulic resilience projects
  • Catchment improvement programmes
  • Major treatment works upgrades
  • Environmental and sustainability-led infrastructure schemes

There is a strong pipeline of work throughout the current investment period, offering the opportunity to become involved in projects from early design and optioneering through to detailed design, construction and commissioning.

What's On Offer

  • Permanent employment on a significant long-term infrastructure programme
  • Company car
  • Hybrid and flexible working
  • Up to 40% remote working where project requirements allow
  • 25 days' annual leave
  • Pension scheme
  • Family-friendly policies
  • Professional development and chartership support
  • Opportunities to progress into more senior technical and engineering leadership positions
