Highway Structures Engineer Location: Manchester Salary: £44,000-£46,000 Contract: Permanent Working Arrangements: Hybrid working available, with regular site visits and stakeholder engagement across the highway network Exciting Opportunity for a Highway Structures Engineer An excellent opportunity has arisen for an experienced Highway Structures Engineer to join a leading highways and infrastructure team, supporting the delivery, maintenance and improvement of a major urban highway network. This is a fantastic opportunity for a technically strong engineer to take a lead role across a diverse portfolio of highway structures projects, including bridge inspections, maintenance programmes, minor works schemes and asset management activities. The successful candidate will be responsible for delivering safe, compliant and cost-effective engineering solutions, working closely with internal teams, contractors, consultants and key stakeholders to ensure highway structures remain operational, resilient and fit for the future. The main duties of the Highway Structures Engineer include: · Leading the delivery of highway structures maintenance programmes, including annual inspection and assessment programmes. · Undertaking and overseeing general and principal bridge inspections in line with relevant standards and legislation. · Managing minor structures design schemes from feasibility through to delivery and completion. · Providing technical advice and support on highway structures, maintenance and asset management matters. · Reviewing designs, proposals and technical submissions for highways and development schemes. · Managing external contractors, consultants and supply chain partners to ensure quality, value for money and compliance. · Supporting contract administration, procurement processes and delivery of NEC-based works. · Preparing technical reports, specifications, risk assessments, cost estimates and project documentation. · Carrying out quality assurance checks, including desktop and site audits of completed works. · Working with internal stakeholders, developers and external partners to resolve complex technical issues. · Supporting continuous improvement across asset management, maintenance delivery and engineering processes. The Highway Structures Engineer will have experience in: · Previous experience working within highway structures engineering, bridge maintenance, asset management or a related discipline. · Strong knowledge of structural inspections, assessments and highway structures design. · Experience delivering maintenance programmes, minor works schemes or infrastructure projects. · Understanding of relevant standards including DMRB, CDM Regulations and technical approval procedures. · Experience managing contractors, consultants and stakeholders throughout project delivery. · Ability to produce technical documentation including specifications, reports, risk assessments and cost estimates. · Knowledge of asset management systems and highway structures databases would be advantageous. · Experience with NEC contracts and contract administration would be beneficial. · Strong communication skills with the ability to present complex technical information clearly. · A degree, HND or equivalent qualification in Civil Engineering, Highway Structures Engineering or a related discipline. · Chartered or Incorporated Engineer status, or working towards professional membership, would be advantageous. · A full UK driving licence is essential due to travel requirements.
