We are currently recruiting for an Assistant Design Engineer to support the delivery of highway maintenance, improvement, and traffic engineering schemes within a well‐established highways and infrastructure programme. This role offers an excellent opportunity to develop technical design experience across highway maintenance, asset management, and active travel schemes, working closely with engineers, technicians, and key stakeholders.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop highway maintenance schemes from defect identification through to treatment selection and construction documentation
- Assist in the design of highway improvement, traffic engineering, pedestrian, and active travel schemes
- Support the production of forward programmes for highway maintenance works
- Assist in the management and delivery of highway condition inspections and asset surveys
- Update and utilise highway asset management systems
- Produce technical reports, drawings, and other design outputs
- Undertake site visits, surveys, and investigations as required
- Ensure all work is delivered in compliance with Quality, Safety, and Environmental (QSE) standards
- Provide technical support, training, and supervision to technicians
- Work collaboratively with stakeholders to understand and develop project objectives
Skills & Experience
- Degree in Civil Engineering or equivalent, or HNC/HND/Foundation Degree with relevant post‐qualification experience
- Experience in highway maintenance design and identifying pavement treatments and solutions
- Asset management and construction experience within the highways sector (ideally 5+ years)
- Experience undertaking highway asset condition surveys
- Commercial awareness in project delivery
- Knowledge of national highways standards including DMRB
- Strong understanding of Health & Safety and environmental requirements in design and construction
- Proficient in Microsoft Office and relevant design software
- AutoCAD and Civil 3D experience (desirable)
- Full UK/EEC driving licence
