We are currently looking for an experienced Housing Options Advisor to join a busy Housing Services team. The role will focus on interviewing and assessing homeless applicants, preventing homelessness through effective housing options and determining statutory duties under Part VII of the Housing Act 1996.
The successful candidate will manage a caseload of homelessness and prevention cases, provide statutory housing advice and explore suitable housing options for customers who are homeless or threatened with homelessness.
The role requires office attendance three days per week.
The Role
- Interviewing and assessing people who are homeless or threatened with homelessness.
- Preventing homelessness by identifying and promoting suitable housing options.
- Determining whether applicants are owed a statutory duty under Part VII of the Housing Act 1996.
- Managing a caseload of homelessness prevention and housing options cases.
- Investigating eligibility, homelessness, priority need, intentionality and local connection.
- Providing statutory advice and assistance to single non-priority homeless applicants.
- Negotiating with landlords and accommodation providers to prevent homelessness.
- Assessing when interim or emergency accommodation duties apply.
- Drafting statutory homelessness decision letters with reference to relevant legislation and case law.
- Providing housing advice to private sector tenants, including cases involving harassment and illegal eviction.
- Undertaking outreach work, including housing advice surgeries.
Key Requirements
- Previous experience working within Housing Options, Homelessness Prevention or Housing Advice.
- Strong knowledge of Part VII of the Housing Act 1996 and relevant homelessness legislation.
- Experience interviewing and assessing homeless applicants.
- Experience determining statutory homelessness duties.
- Experience managing homelessness prevention and housing options caseloads.
- Experience drafting statutory homelessness decision letters.
- Knowledge of the Protection from Eviction Act 1977 and relevant housing legislation.
- Experience providing advice to private sector tenants.
