An opportunity has arisen for a Civil Engineer to join a major infrastructure scheme delivering a 3.5km pipeline as part of the Havant Thicket project for Portsmouth Water. This is a stand out role for someone with 3-5 years' experience who wants to be involved in a live construction environment, contributing directly to both permanent and temporary works design on a technically challenging scheme. You'll be joining a well-established, multi-disciplinary team at a critical stage, with detailed design still evolving across key elements such as caisson shafts and pipe-jacked tunnels. It's a chance to have real input, not just follow drawings.

Why this role stands out:

  • Be part of a high-profile water infrastructure project with long-term security
  • Work closely with delivery teams - not stuck behind a desk
  • Exposure to both design and site-based engineering challenges
  • Opportunity to move onto further schemes across the Southern Water region
  • Join at a key stage where your input genuinely shapes delivery

The role:

This position is heavily design-focused but with a strong site interface. Expect to be:

  • Developing design briefs and managing incoming technical queries
  • Producing calculations, risk assessments, sketches and design outputs
  • Working on concrete structures, shafts, and pipeline-related designs
  • Supporting temporary works design to enable construction
  • Visiting site regularly to liaise with engineers and review progress
  • Ensuring designs are practical, efficient, and correctly implemented

What's needed:

  • Around 3-5 years' experience within civil engineering design
  • Strong understanding of structural design (Eurocodes / British Standards)
  • Experience with concrete design and reinforcement detailing
  • Ability to interpret ground investigation data
  • Proficiency in 2D CAD and FEM software
  • Confident communicator - able to engage with both design and site teams

Desirable experience:

  • Shafts, tunnelling or trenchless works
  • Temporary works (excavations, cofferdams, trench support)
  • Crane platforms / piling mats
  • Lifting design and construction sequencing
  • Pipeline hydraulics
  • Python or similar programming
