Ready to take ownership of a major section of structures works on a major highways project? A leading national highways contractor is looking to appoint 2 freelance Section Engineers for an immediate start on a major highways project in the Gloucester area. This is an excellent opportunity for experienced Section Engineers to join a long-term infrastructure programme and play a key role in delivering critical structures works on site.

With works progressing at pace, our client requires two proactive Section Engineers who can manage defined sections of works, coordinate engineering teams, and support successful project delivery from planning through to completion.

Job Role

As a Section Engineer, you will oversee the technical delivery of a designated section of structures works, ensuring activities are completed safely, on programme, and to specification. Acting as the link between Site Engineers and the Sub Agent, the Section Engineer will combine technical expertise with planning, coordination, and leadership responsibilities.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Taking ownership of a defined section of structures works from planning through to handover
  • Coordinating engineering activities, subcontractors, plant, and materials
  • Providing technical guidance and support to Site Engineers on site
  • Supervising setting out, quality assurance, and associated documentation
  • Ensuring works are delivered in line with design specifications, ITPs, and project standards
  • Monitoring daily progress and escalating issues where required
  • Supporting short-term planning and lookahead programmes
  • Promoting and maintaining high health & safety standards across site operations
  • Mentoring junior engineering staff and driving high-quality project delivery

Requirements

  • Previous experience working as a Section Engineer on highways, structures, or major civil engineering projects
  • Experienced Site Engineers ready to step up will also be considered
  • HNC, degree qualified, or equivalent in Civil Engineering or related discipline
  • Strong technical understanding of structures and highways construction methodologies
  • Proven setting out and QA experience
  • Experience coordinating subcontractors and managing small engineering teams
  • Ability to manage programme targets, technical queries, and quality standards effectively
  • Strong communication and reporting skills
  • Valid CSCS Card preferred
