Overview
Registered Building Inspector (Plan Checking) – Interim
Negotiable day rate (DOE) – Initial 6-month contract – 3 days per week
Fully Remote – Local authority in Essex (client kept confidential)
The role
- Carry out technical plan checking across residential and commercial schemes, ensuring compliance with the Building Regulations (2010, as amended) and associated Approved Documents.
- Prepare clear queries, conditions and decisions, advising applicants/agents on proportionate routes to compliance.
- Manage your own caseload to statutory timeframes, flagging risks early and progressing files to determination.
- Liaise with internal teams and consultees as required (e.g., fire safety, drainage), documenting decisions on the council\\\’s case management system.
- Provide pragmatic, customer-focused advice while upholding public interest and audit standards.
- (Where relevant) escalate applications outside your registration scope and collaborate with senior/peer reviewers.
About you
- Registered Building Inspector (BSR) – Class 2B or higher (essential).
- Strong track record in local authority building control plan checking, including complex domestic and low- to medium-rise non-domestic work.
- Up-to-date knowledge across core Parts (A-S) and confident interpreting drawings, specifications and calculations.
- Comfortable working fully remote, using digital workflows (e.g., Uniform/IDOX or similar) and communicating clearly in writing.
- Thorough, organised and delivery-focused, with the judgement to balance safety, compliance and practicality.
