Have you worked closely with designers and contractors to discharge Principal Designer duties?

Salary: £46,406 - £54,595 plus 20% flexible cash fund (£55,687.20 to £65,514 total monetary package)

Location: Birmingham, in office 3 days per week, 2 from home

Closing date: 19th January 2026

This is a key appointment within a growing assurance-focused team supporting a major infrastructure project in its role as Principal Designer. The role is a core programme position, providing a holistic view across all contracts.

You will support assurance activities across the full breadth of works, including civils, stations and the new railway systems contracts, ensuring Principal Designer duties are being correctly discharged by Design Joint Ventures and delegated.

Essential requirements:

  • Background in civils, systems or railway stations.
  • Experience in a Project Engineer, Senior Engineer, Lead Engineer or Design Manager role within major infrastructure or construction environments.
  • Specific, demonstrable experience supporting Principal Designer duties under CDM Regulations.
  • Strong understanding of design risk management and assurance processes.
  • Experience reviewing hazard logs and risk registers within complex, multi-discipline projects.
  • Strong digital and IT skills, with confidence in reporting, data management and advanced Excel or similar tools.
  • Ability to engage professionally with senior internal and external stakeholders.
  • Degree-qualified in an engineering discipline.

Nice to have:

  • Background in the rail sector.
  • Experience working within contractor, consultancy or design JV environments.
  • Membership of a relevant professional institution, with chartership or working towards.
  • Exposure to automation, digitalisation or AI-enabled reporting tools.
