To work as part of Sefton Youth Justice Service in partnership with statutory and voluntary agencies to prevent children and young people from entering the criminal justice system, and to reduce reoffending where offending has occurred. You will work with children and young people as children first, ensuring their individual needs are understood and addressed. You will support them to make positive changes, reduce risk, and achieve better life outcomes by drawing on multi‑agency support and local resources.
A key focus of the role is safeguarding children and young people, promoting their welfare, managing risk and vulnerability, and ensuring public protection and compliance with legal requirements.
Key Responsibilities- Case Management and Direct Work
- Manage a caseload of children and young people involved in or at risk of offending
- Build positive, trusting relationships with children and their families
- Undertake holistic assessments of needs, risk, and vulnerability
- Deliver targeted interventions aimed at reducing offending behaviour and promoting positive outcomes
- Risk, Safeguarding and Public Protection
- Undertake robust risk assessments relating to harm to self and others
- Safeguard and promote the welfare of children and young people in line with statutory requirements
- Contribute to risk management planning and multi‑agency safeguarding arrangements
- Ensure public protection is maintained at all times
- Planning and Intervention
- Develop and implement structured intervention plans tailored to individual needs
- Support children and families to access appropriate services (education, health, substance misuse, mental health, etc.)
- Promote engagement in education, training, and pro‑social activities
- Reduce reoffending through evidence‑based interventions
- Multi‑Agency Working
- Work collaboratively with partners including social care, police, education, probation, health, and voluntary services
- Share information appropriately to support safeguarding and risk management
- Contribute to multi‑agency meetings, reviews, and case conferences
- Court and Statutory Work
- Prepare high‑quality reports for court and youth justice panels
- Support compliance with court orders and statutory requirements
- Provide professional advice on sentencing and intervention options where required
- Engagement and Participation
- Engage effectively with “hard to reach” children and families
- Ensure children’s voices are central to assessment and planning
- Promote participation in decision‑making processes
- Qualifications
- Social Work qualification OR Diploma in Probation Studies OR Diploma in Higher Education in Youth & Community Work OR Relevant degree in Youth Justice / Criminal Justice or related field with significant experience
- Experience
- Significant experience working with children and families in a youth justice, social care, probation, or related setting
- Experience assessing risk, vulnerability, and complex needs
- Experience developing and delivering intervention plans to reduce offending
- Experience working in partnership with multiple agencies
- Experience engaging children and families who are hard to reach or resistant to services
- Knowledge & Skills
- Strong understanding of youth justice legislation, safeguarding frameworks, and risk management
- Ability to analyse complex information and produce clear assessments
- Knowledge of effective interventions to reduce offending behaviour
- Strong communication and engagement skills with children and families
