Residential Care Home for Older People (65+) Living with Dementia

Purpose of the Role

To provide leadership, management, and operational oversight of a residential care home supporting older people aged 65 and over, including those living with dementia. To ensure the delivery of safe, effective, person‑centred care that meets regulatory requirements, promotes residents’ wellbeing, and maintains high standards of service quality.

Key Responsibilities

Operational Management

  • Lead and manage the day‑to‑day operation of the care home.
  • Ensure compliance with CQC standards, relevant legislation, policies, and recognised best practice.
  • Promote continuous improvement and maintain high‑quality care standards.
  • Monitor service performance and implement improvements where required.

Leadership and Staff Management

  • Recruit, supervise, develop, and support staff to deliver high‑quality care.
  • Manage staffing levels, performance, training, and workforce development.
  • Foster a positive culture focused on dignity, respect, and person‑centred care.
  • Provide guidance and leadership to ensure effective team performance.

Resident Care and Wellbeing

  • Ensure residents receive compassionate, person‑centred support that meets their physical, emotional, and social needs.
  • Promote best practice in dementia care and support staff to deliver specialist care approaches.
  • Work collaboratively with residents, families, and professionals to achieve positive outcomes.

Safeguarding and Compliance

  • Lead safeguarding practices and ensure concerns are managed appropriately.
  • Maintain robust health and safety procedures to protect residents, staff, and visitors.
  • Ensure accurate record‑keeping, risk assessments, and care planning systems are maintained.
  • Oversee quality assurance systems and use findings to drive service improvement.

Financial and Business Management

  • Manage service budgets and resources effectively.
  • Monitor occupancy levels and contribute to maintaining a sustainable and successful service.
  • Ensure value for money while maintaining high standards of care.
  • Protect and enhance the reputation of the service.

Partnership Working

  • Develop and maintain effective relationships with residents, families, healthcare professionals, commissioners, regulators, and other stakeholders.
  • Represent the service at internal and external meetings.
  • Prepare and present reports as required.

Additional Duties

  • Provide operational management support to other Provider Services teams during management absences, as directed by the Head of Service.
  • Participate in the managers’ out‑of‑hours on‑call rota.

Essential Experience

  • Experience working as a Registered Manager within a residential care home for older people.
  • Experience managing staff, budgets, and operational performance.
  • Experience promoting and implementing safeguarding practices.
  • Experience using quality assurance and monitoring systems.
  • Experience managing health and safety responsibilities.
  • Experience developing effective partnerships with stakeholders.
  • Experience presenting reports and representing services at meetings.

Knowledge and Skills

  • Comprehensive knowledge of CQC regulations and residential care legislation.
  • Strong understanding of person‑centred care principles.
  • Knowledge of best practice in supporting older people and individuals living with dementia.
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong organisational and problem‑solving abilities.
  • Competent in Microsoft Office and electronic care management systems.

Qualifications

  • Level 5 Diploma in Leadership and Management for Adult Care/Health and Social Care, or equivalent relevant qualification.

Additional Requirements

  • Enhanced DBS check, including Barred List clearance.
  • Willingness to participate in an out‑of‑hours management on‑call rota.
  • Commitment to continuous professional development and service improvement.
