Main Purpose of the Role

To support children and young people involved in the Youth Justice Service by helping to prevent re-offending and promote positive outcomes.

The postholder will manage Referral Orders and Community Referral Order Panels, ensuring children receive appropriate support and that contracts are proportionate, effective and focused on reducing re-offending and promoting restorative justice.

You will also recruit, train and support community panel members and volunteers and work closely with social workers, partner agencies, victims and other professionals.

Key Responsibilities

  • Coordinate and manage Referral Orders and Community Referral Order Panels.
  • Review and analyse referral order assessments and reports, including safeguarding and public protection information.
  • Support panel members in developing appropriate and achievable contracts for children.
  • Work with children, families, victims and partner agencies to support positive outcomes.
  • Recruit, train, supervise and support community panel members and volunteers.
  • Contribute to restorative justice and reparation activities.
  • Monitor Referral Order activity and analyse performance information.
  • Ensure records, policies and procedures comply with legislation, National Standards and Birmingham Children's Trust requirements.
  • Develop and update guidance and procedures relating to Referral Orders.
  • Provide advice and support to the Youth Justice Service management team.
  • Help identify and commission relevant training for volunteers and panel members.
  • Promote safeguarding, equality, anti-discriminatory practice and the welfare of children.
  • Work closely with Business Support to ensure panels operate effectively.
  • Attend meetings, training and partnership events and represent the Youth Justice Service where required.

Essential Skills & Experience

  • Experience working within Youth Justice, social work, children's services or a related setting.
  • Good understanding of Referral Orders and Youth Justice processes.
  • Experience working with children and young people who may be at risk of offending or re-offending.
  • Knowledge of safeguarding, risk assessment and public protection.
  • Experience working with multiple agencies and professional partners.
  • Strong communication, organisation and report-writing skills.
  • Ability to analyse complex information and make appropriate recommendations.
  • Experience supporting, training or supervising volunteers would be beneficial.
  • Understanding of restorative justice and rehabilitation approaches.
  • Ability to manage competing priorities and work independently.
  • Willingness to work occasional evenings and weekends.
  • Ability to travel across Birmingham as required.
