Role Purpose

To provide expert legal advice, representation, and support to Children and Young People Services in relation to care proceedings and family law matters, ensuring all actions are legally compliant, child-focused, and aligned with statutory responsibilities.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide high-quality legal advice and representation in care proceedings, child protection matters, and related family law cases.
  • Support and advise Children and Young People Services on a wide range of legal queries, ensuring decisions are legally robust and defensible.
  • Conduct detailed legal research into complex or novel issues affecting children’s social care and operational practice.
  • Draft, review, and advise on legal documentation, applications, and court materials.
  • Liaise with social workers, managers, and internal stakeholders to guide lawful decision-making in safeguarding matters.
  • Represent or support representation in court proceedings, ensuring the council’s position is clearly and effectively presented.
  • Ensure compliance with professional obligations, including Law Society standards and Lexcel accreditation requirements.
  • Work collaboratively within the legal team to maintain high standards of practice and service delivery.

Essential Requirements

  • A valid practising certificate (solicitor or barrister qualified to practise in England & Wales).
  • Demonstrable experience in children’s law, including care proceedings and family law matters.
  • Strong ability to interpret and apply complex legislation, case law, and legal principles.
  • Excellent legal research and analytical skills.
  • Ability to provide clear, practical legal advice to non-legal professionals.
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.

Working Arrangements

Hybrid working model: Mondays based at County Hall, Northallerton, North Yorkshire; remaining four days working from home.
