The London Borough of Harrow is seeking an experienced Planning Officer to join its busy and dynamic Planning team on a 6-month contract. This is an excellent opportunity to work within a high-performing London authority, managing a varied caseload and contributing to the delivery of high-quality planning services that shape the local environment.

You will play a key role in assessing planning applications, providing professional planning advice, and supporting decision-making across a wide range of development management functions.

Key Responsibilities
  • Processing and assessing a range of planning applications, including householders, minor, and complex cases
  • Assessing and issuing Lawful Development Certificates
  • Handling prior approval applications
  • Undertaking site visits and preparing detailed planning reports and recommendations
  • Providing a duty planner service to residents, applicants, and stakeholders
  • Delivering pre-application advice
  • Presenting cases at Planning Committee meetings
  • Managing planning appeal casework, including preparation of statements and evidence
  • Providing professional advice on planning legislation, policy, and development management matters
  • Maintaining accurate records and ensuring compliance with statutory requirements
About You

You will be an experienced Planning Officer with a strong background in UK local authority development management. You should be confident managing a varied caseload independently while delivering accurate, timely, and high-quality planning decisions.

You will have:

  • Proven experience in a Planning Officer role within a local authority
  • Strong knowledge of planning legislation, policy, and procedures
  • Excellent report writing and analytical skills
  • Confident communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Ability to manage workload effectively and meet deadlines
  • Experience presenting at Planning Committee (desirable)
  • Ability to provide clear and professional planning advice
