Job Purpose
To provide high-quality statutory social work services to children and young people with disabilities up to the age of 18 and their families. The role involves assessing needs, managing a varied caseload, developing support plans and coordinating appropriate services to improve outcomes for children and young people.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage a varied caseload of children and young people within statutory children’s services.
- Assess the needs, circumstances and risks of children and families and develop appropriate plans of support.
- Undertake direct work with children, young people and their families.
- Support safeguarding and promote the safety and wellbeing of children and young people.
- Work with families using relationship-based and strengths-based social work approaches.
- Develop and review care and support plans to ensure children receive appropriate services.
- Work with children with disabilities and their families to identify strengths, needs and desired outcomes.
- Manage complex cases and respond appropriately to changing circumstances and levels of need.
- Work collaboratively with parents, carers, schools, health professionals and other partner agencies.
- Coordinate bespoke packages of support and ensure services are delivered effectively.
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date case records in accordance with statutory and organisational requirements.
- Ensure statutory duties, procedures and deadlines are met.
- Participate in professional supervision, reflective practice and team meetings.
- Contribute to multi-agency meetings and effective information sharing.
- Advocate for children, young people and families and ensure their views are reflected in assessments and plans.
- Contribute to service development, learning and continuous improvement.
- Maintain professional knowledge and undertake ongoing training and development.
About You
The successful candidate will be a qualified and Social Work England-registered Social Worker with experience of working within statutory children’s services. Experience of working specifically with children with disabilities is desirable but not essential.
You will have strong assessment, communication and relationship-building skills, with the ability to manage a varied caseload and work confidently with complex situations. You will be committed to strengths-based and relationship-based practice and able to work effectively with children, families and a range of partner agencies.
Essential Requirements
- Qualified Social Worker.
- Current registration with Social Work England.
- Experience of statutory children’s social work.
- Experience of assessing children and families.
- Ability to manage a caseload effectively.
- Experience of direct work with children and young people.
- Understanding of safeguarding and child protection.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively with families and professionals.
- Commitment to relationship-based and strengths-based practice.
- Ability to manage complex and sensitive situations.
- Commitment to continuous professional development and reflective practice.
Desirable Experience
- Experience working with children and young people with disabilities.
- Experience of working with complex needs.
- Experience of multi-agency working.
- Knowledge of relevant legislation, statutory guidance and children’s social care procedures.
- Experience of developing and reviewing care/support plans.
Working Environment
The role is based within Knowsley Council’s specialist Children with Disabilities Team. The service provides support, advice and bespoke packages of assistance to children and families. Practitioners benefit from supportive management, manageable caseloads, regular supervision and access to professional development through the council’s Social Work Academy.
Flexible working options include part-time, reduced hours and condensed hours, subject to service requirements.
