Job Purpose

The Personal Care Specialist Teaching Assistant will provide one-to-one and small group support to pupils who require personal care alongside classroom and pastoral support. The role ensures pupils are safe, comfortable, and able to access learning in a supportive and inclusive school environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide personal care support, including changing and hoisting, in line with care plans and dignity standards.
  • Support pupils in the classroom to engage with learning activities under the direction of the teacher.
  • Assist pupils with mobility, positioning, and physical support throughout the school day.
  • Promote pupils’ independence, confidence, and wellbeing at all times.
  • Follow safeguarding, health and safety, and manual handling procedures.
  • Work closely with teachers, SENCOs, and pastoral staff to meet individual pupil needs.
  • Monitor and report on pupils’ wellbeing, progress, and any concerns.
  • Maintain confidentiality and treat all pupils with respect and dignity.

Skills, Experience and Requirements

  • Experience working with children or young people, ideally in a school or SEN setting.
  • Training and competence in hoisting and personal care (essential).
  • Understanding of safeguarding and child protection.
  • Calm, patient, and compassionate approach.
  • Ability to follow care plans and work as part of a team.
  • Good communication skills with staff and pupils.

Additional Information

The role is subject to appropriate safeguarding checks, including an enhanced DBS. Flexibility and reliability are essential due to the temporary nature of the role.
