Main Purpose of the Role

To provide a high-quality customer-focused financial assessment service, supporting around 21,000 vulnerable households with assistance towards rent, Housing Benefit and Council Tax, and social care costs.

The role ensures accurate assessments are completed in line with changing legislation, guidance, and Council standards, while supporting strong service performance.

  • Typical Day May Look Like
  • Assessing Housing Benefit and Council Tax Support claims and changes in circumstances.
  • Completing accurate financial calculations and making decisions on customer entitlement.
  • Checking information and evidence to ensure correct payments are made.
  • Responding to customer enquiries and providing benefit advice.
  • Working with internal teams and external partners to resolve cases.
  • Keeping up to date with changes in regulations and procedures.

Key Responsibilities & Skills

  • Process Housing Benefit and Council Tax Support assessments accurately.
  • Handle complex cases, including self-employed customers and students.
  • Manage overpayments and support recovery action.
  • Verify information to prevent fraud and incorrect payments.
  • Provide clear written and verbal communication to customers.
  • Achieve service targets while maintaining quality standards.
  • Use IT systems effectively, including Microsoft packages such as Excel.
  • Work independently and as part of a team.
  • Deliver excellent customer service, including support for vulnerable residents.
  • Stated Qualification
  • Excellent numeracy and literacy skills to at least GCSE/O Level standard.
