Northumberland County Council is seeking a skilled Fire Risk Assessor to join our Corporate Health & Safety team on a 12-month fixed-term basis. The role is responsible for carrying out fire risk assessments across a diverse portfolio of council buildings and supporting building managers to improve fire safety standards and compliance. You will play a key role in helping to protect staff, service users, and the public by identifying fire risks, evaluating existing controls, and recommending practical improvements in line with current legislation and best practice.

Key Responsibilities

  • Carry out detailed fire risk assessments across a wide range of council properties including schools, libraries, depots, community buildings, and heritage sites.
  • Identify fire hazards, ignition sources, fuel loads, and structural risks.
  • Evaluate fire safety provisions such as alarms, emergency lighting, fire doors, escape routes, and compartmentation.
  • Produce high-quality reports using the PAS79-1:2020 methodology and record findings using digital systems.
  • Provide clear, practical advice to Responsible Persons and building managers on required improvements.
  • Conduct follow-up visits to ensure corrective actions have been implemented.
  • Maintain accurate records and update fire risk assessment databases.
  • Support and share knowledge with colleagues within the Corporate Health & Safety team.
  • Liaise with external stakeholders including Fire and Rescue Services and insurance risk engineers where required.

About You

We are looking for someone who has:

  • Experience in fire risk assessment or fire safety inspection work.
  • Strong knowledge of fire safety legislation and guidance.
  • The ability to identify hazards and assess risk in complex buildings.
  • Excellent written communication skills for producing detailed reports.
  • Confidence in advising and influencing building managers and stakeholders.
  • Strong organisational skills and ability to manage a varied workload independently.

A qualification in fire safety or membership of a relevant professional body would be advantageous.

Additional Information

  • Extensive travel across the county is required; a full driving licence and access to a vehicle are essential.
  • Standard office hours (no night working required).
  • Based at County Hall with flexible hot-desking options.
  • This role does not include line management responsibilities.
