Coventry City Council is looking for an experienced Cook to join the team at Maurice Edelman House, providing freshly prepared, home-cooked meals within a residential setting supporting vulnerable adults with learning disabilities. You will be responsible for preparing and cooking lunch and evening meals for approximately 16-25 people, including around 10 residential residents, 5 respite service users and 6 staff members. The role is focused on providing nutritious, varied meals while ensuring all food is prepared safely and in line with food hygiene and dietary requirements.
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare, cook and present fresh, home-cooked meals to a high standard.
- Prepare lunch and evening meals for approximately 16-25 people.
- Cater for residents, respite service users and staff.
- Prepare meals for a range of specialist and modified-texture diets, including pureed, soft & bite-sized, minced/moist and fork-mashable diets.
- Assist with menu planning and ensure menus provide varied and nutritious meals.
- Order food and supplies and ensure deliveries are correct, good quality and the correct weight.
- Manage food quantities appropriately and work within available budgets.
- Maintain high standards of cleanliness and food hygiene within the kitchen.
- Follow all food safety, health & safety and hygiene regulations.
- Ensure meals are presented attractively and appropriately.
- Work closely with care staff to support the health and wellbeing of service users.
- Report any accidents or health and safety concerns appropriately.
- Deal with feedback, complaints and compliments constructively.
- Work independently and take responsibility for the effective running of the kitchen.
- Attend mandatory training and undertake any other duties appropriate to the grade.
Essential Experience
- Previous experience working as a Cook.
- Experience working within a residential care home, supported living or similar care setting.
- Experience preparing meals for groups of approximately 16-25 people.
- Experience preparing specialist or modified-texture diets.
- Good understanding of food hygiene and safe kitchen practices.
- Ability to plan and prepare varied meals.
- Ability to work independently and manage kitchen responsibilities.
- Good communication skills when working with service users, staff and suppliers.
Essential Qualifications
- Food Hygiene Level 1 or Level 2 - Level 1 accepted, Level 2 preferred.
- Food Safety Level 1 or Level 2.
- NVQ Level 2 in Catering/Cookery, or willingness to work towards it, is desirable.
Compliance Requirements
- Enhanced DBS required with no barred list check. The DBS must state "Cook" as the job title. DBS certificates stating another job title will not be accepted.
- BPSS check required.
- Candidates must be committed to safeguarding and promoting the wellbeing of vulnerable adults.
Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate will be an experienced Care Home Cook or Residential Cook who is confident preparing fresh meals for groups of residents and staff. They will have a strong understanding of food hygiene, specialist diets and modified-texture meals, and be comfortable taking responsibility for the day-to-day running of a kitchen.
