About the Role
We are looking for enthusiastic and reliable
Coastal Environmental Operatives to support the removal of plastic pellets, known as nurdles , from beaches and coastal environments across North Tyneside.
This is a practical, outdoor role focused on helping to keep North Tyneside's beaches clean, safe and environmentally protected.
You will work as part of a team to identify, collect and remove nurdles and other small items of litter from coastal areas.
The role will suit someone who enjoys working outdoors, is physically active and takes pride in contributing to the local environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Carry out litter picking and the collection of plastic nurdles from beaches and coastal areas.
- Search areas of sand, shingle and other coastal environments for small plastic pellets and litter.
- Collect, sort and safely dispose of collected material in line with agreed procedures.
- Use appropriate equipment and tools to support effective beach cleaning.
- Work safely and responsibly in a range of outdoor and coastal conditions.
- Follow instructions regarding the safe handling, storage and disposal of collected materials.
- Maintain awareness of environmental and public safety considerations while working on beaches.
- Help keep work areas clean, organised and free from collected waste.
- Work collaboratively with colleagues and support wider beach-cleansing activities where required.
- Report any significant pollution, waste, hazards or environmental concerns to the appropriate supervisor.
- Travel between different North Tyneside coastal locations as required.
- Represent the organisation professionally when working in public areas and engaging with members of the public.
- Attend early morning, weekend or occasional evening activities where required.
About You

- Physically able to undertake regular walking, bending, lifting and carrying.
- Happy working on beaches and uneven coastal terrain.
- Able to follow instructions and health and safety procedures.
- Comfortable working independently and as part of a team.
- Environmentally aware and interested in protecting local beaches and coastal habitats.
- Professional and respectful when working around members of the public.
- Flexible regarding working hours and locations.
Previous experience in litter picking, street cleansing, environmental services, beach cleaning or waste management would be beneficial but is not essential , as training and appropriate PPE will be provided.
Working Conditions
This is an outdoor, physically active role. The successful candidate should be prepared for:
- Regular walking, bending, lifting and carrying.
- Working on sand, shingle and uneven coastal surfaces.
- Working outdoors in changing weather conditions.
- Early morning starts, weekends and occasional evening events.
- Travel between coastal locations across North Tyneside.
- Handling and collecting small items of plastic and other litter using appropriate PPE and equipment.
