Carriera is partnering with a growing consultancy to recruit an experienced Principal Designer to support the expansion of their business in the Theale area. This is an excellent opportunity for a skilled professional to manage multiple projects across sectors including housing, education, and commercial developments, while ensuring health and safety excellence throughout the project lifecycle.
The Role
You will be responsible for delivering Principal Designer services, working closely with clients, designers, and contractors to ensure health and safety is fully integrated into every stage of design and construction. The role offers the chance to develop expertise in key hazards typical to building and construction projects while working both independently and as part of a wider team.
Key Responsibilities
- Advise clients on their duties under CDM Regulations
- Act as the point of contact for Principal Designer duties, ensuring compliance with statutory requirements, approved codes of practice, and industry guidance
- Liaise with designers to develop a Design Risk Management schedule
- Collate pre-construction information and identify gaps
- Conduct health and safety design reviews throughout the project lifecycle
- Promote clear communication between project duty holders regarding health and safety issues
- Prepare and issue project-specific Health and Safety Files on completion
- Support designers and project managers with specialist CDM advice
About You
- Health and Safety professional with registered membership of APS or IOSH
- Degree or equivalent in a construction-related subject with at least 3 years post-qualification experience
- Thorough knowledge of CDM 2015, L144 guidance, and general industry best practice
- Experience in Design Risk Management and multi-discipline construction projects
- Consulting experience and strong knowledge of construction techniques
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
- Effective self-management and time management skills
