We’re now looking for an enthusiastic Apprentice GPS Operative to join our Water Management Services Department and become part of our experienced survey team. Due to site requirements, you will need to be over the age of 18 to apply.
About the Role
This is a brilliant opportunity for someone starting out in their career who enjoys problem-solving, working outdoors, and being part of a collaborative team. You’ll play a key role in capturing drainage asset data across the UK’s highways network using GPS handheld equipment and bespoke survey software. Every day will be different — and you’ll be supported throughout your journey with full training, mentoring, and development opportunities.
What You’ll Do
- Receive comprehensive training to develop your technical and surveying skills
- Carry out drainage asset inventory, condition surveys and mapping
- Use GPS handheld devices and Carnell’s bespoke software to capture accurate data
- Apply guidance from CD 535, CS 551 and drainage data standards (training provided)
- Work a rotating shift pattern including days, nights, weekends and overtime
- Maintain strong quality control and adjust work where necessary
- Communicate effectively with supervisors, colleagues and clients
- Participate in team meetings and performance reviews
- Help maintain a clean, safe and hazard-free working environment
Who We’re Looking For
You don’t need previous survey experience — just enthusiasm, commitment, and a willingness to learn. We’re looking for someone who is:
- Computer literate and comfortable using handheld technology
- Organised, practical and detail-focused
- A confident communicator and team player
- Flexible, open-minded and willing to work away from home
- Aware of general safety and quality requirements
Desirable (but not essential):
- CSCS card
- Full driving licence
