We are seeking an experienced Risk Manager to lead the identification, assessment, management, and mitigation of risk on a major nuclear and civils infrastructure project in Whitehaven. The role is critical to ensuring that project risks are proactively managed in line with nuclear regulatory expectations, client requirements, and best practice risk management frameworks. The Risk Manager will work closely with project leadership, commercial, planning, engineering, and construction teams to ensure risks and opportunities are clearly understood, controlled, and communicated throughout the project lifecycle.

Key Responsibilities

  • Risk Management & Governance
    • Develop, implement, and maintain the project Risk Management Plan in line with client and nuclear industry requirements.
    • Establish and manage the project risk and opportunity registers, ensuring they remain accurate, current, and actionable.
    • Define risk management processes, governance, and reporting structures across the project.
    • Ensure risk management is embedded within project controls, planning, commercial, and delivery activities.
  • Risk Identification & Analysis
    • Facilitate risk identification workshops with project teams and stakeholders.
    • Assess and prioritise risks using qualitative and quantitative techniques, including schedule and cost risk analysis where required.
    • Identify emerging risks and opportunities throughout the project lifecycle.
    • Support scenario planning and sensitivity analysis to inform decision‑making.
  • Monitoring, Reporting & Assurance
    • Monitor risk exposure, mitigation actions, and residual risk status.
    • Produce clear and concise risk reports and dashboards for senior management and the client.
    • Support internal and external audits, assurance reviews, and regulatory scrutiny.
    • Ensure lessons learned are captured and fed back into risk strategies.
  • Stakeholder & Interface Management
    • Work closely with Project Managers, Planners, Commercial Managers, and Engineers to align risk management with programme and cost controls.
    • Interface with the client and key stakeholders on risk matters, providing professional and credible advice.
    • Support decision‑making by providing timely, evidence‑based risk insights.
  • Continuous Improvement
    • Promote a proactive risk‑aware culture across the project team.
    • Drive continuous improvement in risk management practices and controls.
    • Support the development of best practice risk methodologies within the project environment.

Skills & Experience

Essential

  • Proven experience as a Risk Manager on major construction, civils, or infrastructure projects.
  • Experience working in highly regulated or safety‑critical environments (nuclear, energy, defence, or major infrastructure).
  • Strong understanding of project risk management principles and governance.
  • Experience facilitating risk workshops and engaging with senior stakeholders.
  • Ability to analyse, interpret, and communicate complex risk information clearly.
  • High level of attention to detail and strong organisational skills.
  • Eligible for UK security clearance.

Desirable

  • Previous experience on nuclear‑licensed sites or nuclear‑related programmes.
  • Experience integrating risk management with cost, schedule, and commercial controls.
  • Familiarity with NEC or similar forms of contract.
  • Experience supporting quantitative risk analysis (QRA / QSRA).
