Carmichael UK are seeking an experienced Service Locator to join a major infrastructure redevelopment project based within a live MOD environment in Plymouth. This is an excellent opportunity to work on a complex, secure site, supporting safe excavation and utility mapping operations.
As a Service Locator, you will be responsible for the detection, verification, and protection of underground services across designated work areas. Using specialist geophysical equipment, you will identify and mark services, ensuring all excavation activities are carried out safely and in compliance with permit procedures. You will play a key role in maintaining site safety standards, supporting work teams, and ensuring accurate service records are upheld.
Key Responsibilities- Locate and survey underground services using GPR, CAT & Genny equipment
- Mark out services clearly, including type and depth using correct colour standards
- Authorise and manage Permit to Break Ground processes
- Ensure full compliance with excavation and permit procedures
- Brief site teams on service locations and safe systems of work
- Maintain and update service records and drawings
- Enforce exclusion zones around live services
- Identify and report discrepancies or uncharted services
- Carry out incremental scans and maintain markers throughout excavation works
- Obtain required approvals and signatures for permit documentation
- CSCS Card
- Proven experience in utility detection / service locating (minimum 2–3 years)
- Strong working knowledge of GPR, CAT & Genny equipment
- Understanding of PAS 128 and TSA standards
- Knowledge of HSG47 and GS6
- Ability to interpret drawings and communicate findings clearly on site
- Strong communication skills with the ability to work collaboratively in a team environment
- Experience working in nuclear or highly regulated environments
- QCF Level 3 or 5 in Utility Mapping
Due to the nature of the project: BPSS security clearance is required (can take up to 8 weeks). Candidates must have resided in the UK for the past 5 years. Must be a British National or hold a passport from a NATO or MISWG member country. Must not hold dual nationality outside of NATO or MISWG member countries. Eligibility to work on secure sites is essential.
