We are working with a rapidly expanding MGA that has experienced significant growth and has ambitious plans for the continued development of its Professional Indemnity portfolio. As part of that growth, the business is looking to appoint a technically strong Professional Indemnity Underwriter to work closely with the Head of PI. This is a high visibility role offering exposure to complex risks, portfolio development and senior underwriting decisions. It would suit an underwriter who wants greater technical responsibility and long term progression within a growing London Market business.
The emphasis of this position is on strong underwriting judgement, technical analysis and disciplined portfolio management. While established relationships with London Market brokers will be valuable, this is not primarily a business development or relationship management role.
The Role
You will support the underwriting and continued development of a profitable Professional Indemnity portfolio, handling both new and existing business across a range of professional sectors. Key responsibilities will include:
- Underwriting new business, renewals and mid-term adjustments across a varied PI portfolio
- Assessing risks through detailed analysis of proposal information, financial accounts, claims history and sector-specific exposures
- Reviewing policy wordings, endorsements, exclusions and coverage requirements
- Making sound underwriting decisions within delegated authority
- Preparing clear and detailed referrals for risks falling outside agreed authority levels
- Handling more complex or unusual cases in conjunction with the Head of PI
- Supporting the development of pricing, appetite and underwriting strategy
- Monitoring portfolio performance, loss trends and emerging risk exposures
- Ensuring risks are written in line with underwriting guidelines, capacity requirements and commercial objectives
- Maintaining accurate underwriting records and supporting audit, compliance and governance requirements
- Working constructively with London Market brokers to obtain the information required to assess and progress risks
- Providing technical guidance and responding to coverage or policy queries
- Contributing to the continued development of the PI product offering as the portfolio grows
About You
We are looking for a technically capable PI Underwriter with experience gained within an insurer or MGA environment. To be considered, you should have:
- Approximately three to five years of Professional Indemnity underwriting experience
- Experience underwriting PI risks within the London Market
- A strong understanding of PI policy wordings, coverage, claims exposures and risk factors
- Experience assessing financial information, claims history and professional sector exposures
- A disciplined and analytical approach to underwriting
- Experience working within delegated authority and referral structures
- The ability to make balanced underwriting decisions based on both technical and commercial considerations
- Strong attention to detail and accurate record keeping
- Confident communication skills when dealing with brokers and internal stakeholders
- An established network of London Market broker contacts, or regular experience trading with London brokers
You do not need to be a pure business development underwriter. The priority is technical capability, sound judgement and the ability to contribute to the profitable development of the portfolio.
Why Join?
This role offers the opportunity to:
- Work directly with an experienced Head of PI
- Gain exposure to complex and varied Professional Indemnity risks
- Play an important role in shaping a developing portfolio
- Take on increasing authority and technical responsibility
- Join a business with significant growth plans
- Build a clear route toward senior underwriting or portfolio leadership
- Work within a flexible hybrid model
The salary for this position is between £50,000 and £70,000, depending on experience, alongside a competitive benefits package.
To be considered, please submit a complete and up-to-date CV clearly outlining your Professional Indemnity underwriting and London Market experience.
