Carlton Young is working with a growing specialist MGA that is looking to appoint an experienced Accident & Health Underwriter as part of its continued development plans. This is an opportunity for someone who has already built strong A&H underwriting experience and is now looking for greater visibility, broader responsibility and the chance to play an important role in the development of a growing portfolio. The business is building carefully and with long-term intent. The successful candidate will work closely with senior underwriting leadership, supporting the day-to-day management and development of the Accident & Health account while contributing to the wider growth strategy.
This role could suit an established Underwriter, Senior Underwriter or developing portfolio specialist with experience across Accident & Health, Travel, Personal Accident, Sports, Entertainment or related specialist classes. Previous Accident & Health underwriting experience is essential.
The Role
The Accident & Health Underwriter will be responsible for underwriting new and renewal business across a specialist portfolio. Responsibilities will include:
- Reviewing and assessing new business and renewal submissions
- Pricing risks in line with agreed appetite, authority and portfolio objectives
- Underwriting a range of Accident & Health risks across relevant specialist sectors
- Reviewing claims information, exposure data and supporting documentation
- Making sound underwriting decisions within delegated authority
- Preparing clear referrals for risks outside agreed authority levels
- Working closely with brokers to obtain information, negotiate terms and progress opportunities
- Supporting the development of profitable broker relationships
- Contributing to portfolio monitoring, reporting and performance analysis
- Maintaining strong underwriting discipline as the account grows
- Supporting the development of wordings, pricing approaches and underwriting guidelines
- Monitoring market conditions, emerging exposures and competitor activity
- Maintaining accurate underwriting records and supporting audit and compliance requirements
- Working closely with senior underwriting leadership on the continued development of the A&H proposition
About You
We are interested in speaking with candidates who have:
- Strong Accident & Health underwriting experience
- Experience gained within an MGA, Lloyd’s business, insurer or specialist market environment
- Exposure to Travel, Personal Accident, Sports, Entertainment or related A&H classes
- Strong technical underwriting judgement
- Experience reviewing, pricing and managing risks confidently
- An understanding of delegated authority and referral structures
- Broker-facing experience and the ability to build credible market relationships
- The ability to operate effectively within a growing and entrepreneurial environment
This role would particularly suit someone who wants to develop into a broader senior or portfolio leadership position over time and who would value close exposure to underwriting decision-making.
The Opportunity
