Approved Mental Health Professional - Adult Mental Health Services

About the Role

We are seeking an experienced and motivated Approved Mental Health Professional (AMHP) to join our Adult Mental Health Service in South London. This permanent, full‑time role offers a salary of £42,060-£50,085 per annum (up to £52,194 unconsolidated maximum), alongside Recruitment and Retention benefits. As an AMHP within our dedicated Mental Health Team, you will play a vital role in delivering high‑quality, responsive services to individuals experiencing significant mental health needs. You will carry out Mental Health Act assessments, safeguard individuals' rights, and work collaboratively with service users, families and multidisciplinary colleagues to ensure safe, effective and person‑centred outcomes.

Your core responsibilities will include:

  • Conducting Mental Health Act assessments and ensuring lawful, ethical decision‑making.
  • Advocating for individuals’ rights, preferences and participation throughout assessment processes.
  • Developing personalised care plans that promote safety, recovery and wellbeing.
  • Working effectively with families, carers and professionals across health and social care.
  • Managing emotionally demanding and crisis‑driven situations with resilience and professionalism.
  • Supporting statutory responsibilities under the Care Act, including Section 117 aftercare and Social Supervision where required.

About You

  • In‑depth knowledge of the Mental Health Act, Care Act 2014, Mental Capacity Act and Human Rights Act.
  • Strong understanding of the Mental Health Code of Practice and relevant legal frameworks.
  • Direct experience supporting individuals with complex mental health needs.
  • Commitment to ongoing professional development within Mental Health Social Work.
  • A valid AMHP warrant and evidence of maintaining your qualification.
  • Current registration with Social Work England.
  • A full driving licence and access to a vehicle.
  • Willingness to travel outside the immediate area to visit service users.

About Our Service

Our Mental Health Team operates as part of a specialist borough‑wide service, working closely with NHS partners, inpatient units and community providers. You'll be based within a full‑time dedicated AMHP service, completing Mental Health Act assessments daily and contributing to wider Care Act responsibilities when required. We strive to promote a supportive, inclusive and collaborative working environment with strong leadership, clear development pathways and a commitment to staff wellbeing.
