We are seeking an experienced and committed Safeguarding and Independent Reviewing Officer to promote the safety, wellbeing and positive outcomes of children and young people. In this role, you will undertake independent reviews for children who are looked after, ensuring that care plans are purposeful, effective and focused on achieving permanence. You will ensure that children’s views, wishes and feelings are central to all decisions and that their rights are upheld throughout the care planning and review process.
You will chair statutory reviews, monitor progress against agreed actions and provide constructive challenge to social workers, carers, families and partner agencies where required. The role will involve identifying safeguarding concerns, escalating drift or delay, and ensuring that plans respond appropriately to changing needs and risks. You will work closely with social care teams, education, health, fostering and other professionals to promote coordinated support and secure the best possible outcomes for children. You may also contribute to safeguarding meetings, quality assurance activity, practice development and the continuous improvement of services.
Applicants must hold a recognised social work qualification and be registered with the relevant professional regulator. You will have substantial post-qualification experience in children’s social care, including child protection, looked-after children and care planning, together with a sound understanding of relevant legislation, statutory guidance and safeguarding procedures. Experience of chairing reviews, providing independent oversight and constructively challenging professional practice is essential. You will need excellent communication, analytical and report-writing skills, sound professional judgement and the ability to manage competing priorities. A commitment to anti-discriminatory practice, participation, partnership working and improving outcomes for vulnerable children is fundamental. The successful candidate will be expected to maintain accurate records, meet statutory timescales and demonstrate integrity, independence and resilience in complex situations.
