Appropriate Adult Volunteer (AA)

The CCP Appropriate Adult Service supports, advises and assists vulnerable adults and young people aged 17 and under in police custody. Volunteers act as Appropriate Adults or provide telephone/administrative support.

Key Responsibilities

  • Ensure the detained person’s welfare needs are met and rights are upheld.
  • Assist them to communicate with the police.
  • Help them understand the procedures, observe that the process is fair, and ensure outcomes are understood.
  • Support, advise and assist them when they are asked to provide information or participate in any procedure (as per Police and Criminal Evidence Act 1984, Code C, paragraph 1.7A).
  • Observe whether the police are acting properly and fairly; inform an inspector or above if there are concerns.
  • Respect the detained person’s right to remain silent unless they wish to speak.
  • Help them understand and protect their rights.

Volunteer Requirements

  • Full driving licence and access to a private vehicle – a car is essential.
  • Availability for a monthly rota; volunteers can choose a shift pattern that suits them (weekly rota from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. in three shifts).
  • Commitment to attend call‑outs, most of which occur at police custody in Quedgeley, with occasional duty at other police stations or DWP/fraud interviews.
  • Ready to complete full AA training to national standards, ongoing support and supervision.
