We’re looking for a Project Engineer who will play a key role in successfully delivering complex civil engineering projects within Careys Civil Engineering. Working closely with our Project and Construction Managers, you will use your technical expertise, leadership capability and commercial awareness to drive operational excellence across the project lifecycle. You’ll lead and support Senior Engineers and the wider engineering team, ensuring work is delivered safely, efficiently and to the highest quality while maintaining strong relationships with subcontractors, consultants, suppliers and wider stakeholders.
Key Responsibilities
- Ensure technical compliance with the contract and liaise with third parties on technical matters.
- Monitor events affecting progress including delays, variations and risks.
- Contribute to commercial systems, cost monitoring, and claims/dispute understanding.
- Resolve project setting-out issues and ensure specification compliance.
- Oversee engineering budgets, control systems, and as-built information accuracy.
- Maintain strong engineering standards and provide technical guidance to the site team.
- Maintain efficient communication with designers and clients.
- Ensure buildability, value engineering, and statutory requirements are incorporated.
- Manage and review design information to support construction needs.
- Fulfil environmental obligations and interpret project environmental reports.
- Take overall responsibility for site quality systems, inspections and testing regimes.
- Oversee NCR resolution and ensure robust quality controls are in place.
- Provide clear leadership, guidance and support to engineers.
- Manage competency, performance, and development of the engineering team.
- Drive innovation, technical excellence, and continual improvement across the project.
- Approve and monitor material suitability, testing and interactions.
- Prepare and monitor complex programmes, procurement activities and productivity systems.
- Analyse wastage reports and identify efficiencies.
- Prepare and approve risk assessments, method statements and safe systems of work.
- Maintain strong knowledge of safety regulations, temporary works, and high-risk operations.
- Assess engineer competencies and ensure all activities are safely delivered.
- Act as TWC for high-risk temporary works when required.
- Design low-risk/medium-risk temporary works or produce design briefs.
- Manage component procurement and assess load conditions and technical risks.

- Strong technical engineering background within civil engineering projects.
- Experience leading engineering teams and overseeing Senior Engineers.
- Proven ability to manage design processes, temporary works and quality systems.
- Strong commercial awareness including cost monitoring and contractual understanding.

- Excellent communication, stakeholder management and problem-solving skills.
Desirable
- Experience acting as TWC and designing temporary works.
- Experience in high-risk operations (e.g., ground contamination, major temporary works).
- Knowledge of statutory employment and contract law relevant to site operations.
