The Storeman is responsible for the safe, accurate and efficient control of materials, tools, consumables and small plant across the site. This role ensures that deliveries are received correctly, stock is managed and organised, and materials are issued promptly to support site productivity. Working within the wider logistics team, the Storeman plays a crucial part in maintaining a well-run compound and ensuring that all materials handling meets Careys’ high safety and quality standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Receive, check and sign for deliveries in accordance with purchase orders and delivery documentation.
- Inspect incoming materials for correct quantities, specification and damage.
- Organise unloading areas safely and coordinate with drivers, plant ops and banksmen where required.
- Maintain accurate stock records, including logging goods in/out and conducting regular stock checks.
- Ensure all materials are clearly labelled, stored securely and segregated where necessary (e.g. COSHH).
- Keep stores, containers and compound areas tidy, accessible and compliant with safety standards.
- Issue materials, tools and small plant to operatives and subcontractors and maintain proper tracking.
- Monitor stock levels and notify the logistics manager of low or urgent requirements.
- Support the management of PPE, consumables and lifting accessories as required.
- Promote safe working practices and highlight hazards, near misses or non-conformances.
- Assist with waste segregation, traffic management and general logistics duties when needed.
Skills, Knowledge and Expertise
- Strong organisational and time management skills.
- Excellent attention to detail during stock control and documentation.
- Effective communication with suppliers, drivers and site teams.
- Ability to work independently and prioritise tasks in a busy site environment.
- Positive, proactive and safety-driven approach.
- Understanding of construction materials, components and handling requirements.
- Awareness of safe loading/unloading procedures and traffic flow on site.
- Familiarity with stock systems, delivery notes and inventory controls.
- Basic knowledge of COSHH and safe storage practices.
- CSCS card – essential.
- Previous experience as a Storeman, Materials Controller or similar role on a construction project – essential.
- Experience managing stores, compounds or stock control systems – desirable.
- FLT / Telehandler / NPORS / CPCS plant tickets – desirable depending on site requirements.
- Manual handling and COSHH training (often provided via site induction).
