We are currently seeking a full-time SEND Teaching Assistant to support a Reception-aged pupil within a welcoming and inclusive primary school in Lewisham.
The role involves providing 1:1 support for a child with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) who is non-verbal and requires additional assistance with communication, personal care, and behavioural support.
The Role
As a SEND Teaching Assistant, you will
- Provide dedicated 1:1 support within the Reception classroom.
- Support a pupil with ASD and significant communication needs.
- Use visual aids, communication strategies, and sensory approaches to support learning and engagement.
- Assist with personal care when required.
- Help manage challenging behaviours in a calm, positive, and consistent manner.
- Work closely with the class teacher, SENCO, and external professionals.
- Foster a safe, nurturing, and inclusive learning environment.
- The Ideal Candidate
The successful candidate will have
- Previous experience supporting children with SEND, particularly ASD.
- Experience working with non-verbal pupils.
- Confidence supporting personal care needs.
- A calm, patient, and resilient approach to behaviour management.
- Strong communication and teamwork skills.
- A genuine passion for supporting children with additional needs.
Desirable
- Experience within a primary school or early years setting.
- Knowledge of PECS, Makaton, or other communication methods.
- Relevant Teaching Assistant or SEND qualifications.
- Spanish speaking
