Career Moves is seeking a Taxonomist to support the ecommerce initiatives within the catalog organisation of an iconic global tech brand. This role focuses on enriching and normalising product client data (such as Brand) into a unified product taxonomy, enabling machine learning development and enhancing catalog-wide initiatives.
Role Overview
The Taxonomist will be responsible for elevating the quality, structure, and consistency of product data across multiple streams. Their work will directly support machine learning models, taxonomy expansion, category structuring, and cross-functional optimisation. The position involves close collaboration with engineering teams to annotate data, improve ML understanding, and evaluate model outputs.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct detailed data analysis using Excel, Google Sheets, or scripting languages to identify identical and fuzzy matches across vocabularies.
- Perform internal and external research to enrich taxonomy node client data.
- Provide regular status updates on progress, issues, questions, and potential opportunities to partners and stakeholders.
- Implement taxonomy updates in alignment with established taxonomy governance guidelines.
- Support tasks related to cross-taxonomy mapping, vertical expansion, and front-end taxonomy design.
- Collaborate with engineers to enhance machine learning annotation and evaluate model output.
Minimum Requirements
- 2+ years’ experience developing taxonomies or ontologies for both front-end and back-end applications.
- Demonstrated experience building taxonomies or ecommerce-driven classification systems.
- Experience researching and defining taxonomy client data using recognised standards.
- Exposure to a broad range of topic and domain types.
- Strong communication skills, with the ability to present taxonomy principles and standards clearly.
- Proven ownership mindset and ability to self-start, build partner relationships, and develop informed viewpoints.
- Strong proactive communication skills across projects and workstreams.
- High attention to detail and dedication to accurate taxonomy development work.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s degree in Library Science or Information Management.
- Experience analysing large datasets using SQL or other query languages.
- Experience developing taxonomies for machine learning classification systems.
- Familiarity with prompt engineering and modern AI tools.
