The Role: We are looking for an experienced Mechanical Design Engineer to support the design and development of bespoke fabricated steel products and assemblies. This role will be responsible for producing high-quality 3D models, manufacturing drawings, bills of materials, and technical documentation that support purchasing, production, and operational activities. Working within a collaborative engineering team, you will play a key role throughout the product lifecycle, ensuring designs are safe, compliant, manufacturable, and delivered to programme.
Key Responsibilities:
- Create and develop detailed 3D models using Autodesk Inventor.
- Produce General Arrangement, fabrication, assembly, and as-built drawings in accordance with BS 8888 standards.
- Generate accurate Bills of Materials (BOMs) and manufacturing documentation.
- Ensure designs consider manufacturability, installation, operation, maintenance, and material limitations.
- Conduct and document Designer Risk Assessments, incorporating risk mitigation measures into designs.
- Collaborate closely with analysis engineers and wider project teams to ensure design integrity and compliance.
- Participate in design reviews and manufacturability reviews, communicating design intent effectively.
- Support continuous improvement initiatives and contribute to research and development activities.
- Manage engineering changes and ensure accurate change capture throughout projects.
- Liaise with internal stakeholders, suppliers, and customers where required.
About You:
You will be a proactive and detail-oriented engineer with a strong understanding of steel fabrication and manufacturing processes. You will be comfortable working independently while contributing effectively within a multidisciplinary engineering team.
Essential Requirements:
- HND in Engineering with a minimum of 5 years' experience in industrial sheet metal or steel fabrication design; or Degree (BEng or equivalent) in Engineering, preferably Mechanical Engineering, with a minimum of 3 years' relevant experience.
- Proficient in Autodesk Inventor, AutoCAD, and Autodesk Vault.
- Strong understanding of steel manufacturing techniques and limitations, including press brake operations.
- Knowledge of structural load paths, failure modes, and component operating limits.
- Working knowledge of BS 8888 engineering drawing standards.
- Experience producing Designer Risk Assessments.
- Strong communication skills and ability to work with both internal and external stakeholders.
- Commitment to delivering quality work within project timescales.
Desirable Skills:
- Knowledge of welding methods, strengths, and limitations.
- Understanding of tolerance stack-up and practical tolerance application.
- Aware of product performance testing standards.
- Understanding of drive and control systems.
- Experience with iLogic or Visual Basic programming within Autodesk environments.
- Existing Security Clearance (SC) or eligibility to obtain it.
