Job Description
Compliance and Risk Counsel – Professional Indemnity & Insurance
Location: London
Contract: Permanent
About the Role
Our client, a leading international law firm, is seeking a qualified and experienced litigation lawyer to join their Compliance and Risk team as a Compliance and Risk Counsel, with a focus on professional indemnity (PI), complaints, and internal contentious matters. This is a fantastic opportunity for a litigation professional to operate at the intersection of legal risk, insurance, and regulatory compliance within a prestigious firm environment.
The successful candidate will report to the Head of Professional Liability, who leads on managing the firm’s claims, complaints, and insurance matters across both PI and non-PI risk categories.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead or support the reporting and management of professional indemnity claims, ensuring timely and effective resolution.
- Investigate and draft responses to client complaints, with a particular emphasis on those triggering or potentially triggering PI exposure.
- Manage simpler claims independently and liaise with external counsel on complex or high-value professional liability matters.
- Coordinate and maintain accurate records of all complaints, deadlines, and claims.
- Work directly with the Legal Ombudsman and other regulatory bodies on client-facing disputes.
- Prepare and support PI insurance notifications and renewals, working closely with the Head of Professional Liability and relevant brokers.
- Contribute to internal investigations and regulatory inquiries, particularly where potential liability or reputational risk to the firm may arise.
- Advise on a range of contentious matters, including supplier disputes and internal firm issues.
- Maintain compliance with the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) Standards and Regulations, as well as all internal policies and procedures.
Candidate Profile
Essential Experience:
- UK-qualified lawyer with a minimum of 5–7 years’ post-qualification experience, ideally in civil/commercial litigation.
- Strong experience in professional indemnity and negligence claims—particularly acting for or against law firms or professional service providers.
- Proven ability to manage contentious matters in-house or within private practice.
- Familiarity with insurance coverage issues, especially related to PI policies.
Desirable Attributes:
- Direct experience with claims involving solicitors or legal professionals.
- Background in or exposure to regulatory risk, internal investigations, or law firm compliance.
- Previous in-house experience in a legal risk or claims role is beneficial.
- Experience working within a large City or international law firm environment.
Personal Competencies
- Self-sufficient and able to operate independently while collaborating effectively across multiple departments.
- Confident communicator with the ability to deliver complex or sensitive advice clearly and persuasively.
- Organized and detail-oriented, capable of managing deadlines and multiple workstreams.
- Resilient, adaptable, and proactive in problem-solving.
