The Retail estate consists of more than 600 Barnardo's shops across the UK. The stores are supported by donated goods, including furniture, from the public and by Commercial Businesses, who comprise of New Goods, Gifts in Kind and Ecommerce. The role of the Logistics & Transport department is to manage the operation and planning of all drivers and fleet vehicles and support the stock optimisation of the Retail estate.
The role of Retail Van Driver will provide a cost-effective logistical service to all retail areas, by effectively moving stock in the most geographical-efficient way possible. The role will directly report to the Logistics Manager and will be supported daily by Regional Retail Van Driver Team Leaders.
Key working relationships:
- Internal: Head of Logistics & Transport, Logistics Manager, Retail Van Drivers Team Leader, Retail Estate including Store Managers, Store Associates and Volunteers, Retail Operations Team including Regional and Area Business Managers, Commercial Businesses Team including New Goods, GIK and Ecommerce.
- External: General Public, Corporate Donors, Suppliers, Wider Charity stakeholders.
Job Purpose: The role will be required to follow set logistical routes instructed by the Logistics Manager, which will efficiently move stock across the entire Retail estate. This will include daily and regular Manual Handling, by moving, lifting, loading, and unloading stock and furniture from the vehicle into the store stock room or a customer's home.
Retail Van Drivers will also be required to maintain high vehicle standards, by performing daily vehicle checks and maintaining accurate records.
Key Responsibilities:
- Efficient stock movement in line with set route planning.
- Work and drive across a large geographical area.
- Manual Handling of stock and furniture.
- Ensure vehicles are safely loaded and within weight capacity.
- Ensure paramount vehicle safety at all times and return vans back to base at the end of every working day.
- Liaising with the general public to co‐ordinate stock collections/deliveries.
- Drive in a diligent manner at all times.
- Represent Barnardo's at all times, by ensuring that any actions reinforce our Basis & Values.
Key Activities:
- Ensure that all stock requests are complete in a timely and suitable manner.
- Appropriately ensure the safety and quality of stock at all times.
- Support stock procurement initiatives where possible.
- Provide excellent customer service when dealing with all internal and external stakeholders.
- Maintain regular and appropriate daily contact with Logistics Team.
- Ensure the vehicle is compliant and in line with all legislation and H&S expectations.
- Report all vehicles issues and/or motor vehicle accidents to the Transport department.
- Complete a daily vehicle check and fulfil daily record keeping such as daily mileage.
- General maintenance and cleanliness of vehicle.
- Deal with any daily enquiries and signpost to other services or members of the organisation as necessary.
- Attending team meetings and team development/training days as required.
- Providing other general support to the team as necessary.
