Responsibilities include supporting the Ophthalmology Directorate at New Cross Hospital. Outpatient workload duties involve new, results and elective operating theatre lists. Responsibilities also encompass research, education, audit, and continuing professional development.

The post holder will take responsibility for continuing professional education in accordance with guidelines set out by the appropriate college/faculty/professional body. They will actively participate in research and audit programmes in accordance with Trust policies and procedures.

Collaboration with colleagues is essential in developing skills to provide new ways of working across different professions. In conjunction with colleagues, the post holder will ensure that the requirements of clinical governance are met.

Duties will involve covering breast clinics and elective operating theatre lists. The post holder will be responsible for the clinical care of patients under supervision as necessary, maintaining proper case records and investigations on patients, and correspondence with General Practitioners and others as required.

Participation in clinical and other service activities is expected to ensure a high standard of patient care. Flexibility and cross-cover for colleagues are required. The post holder will take an active part in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and training, contribute to the management of the clinical service and service development, and assist in the research and development of the department.

Covering for colleagues as appropriate and in accordance with local Trust arrangements and Trust Policy is necessary. Participation in clinical audit/departmental teaching is expected; the Trust has a supportive environment and is small enough for personal contact with colleagues from a wide variety of disciplines. A multidisciplinary mortality and morbidity meeting is held every month.

The appointment is a whole-time appointment to the Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust. The post holder will be managerially accountable to the Clinical Director of Ophthalmology. Approval for leave is at the discretion of the relevant Consultants and is dependent on continuity of patient care.

Applicants should, by the date of commencement, have registered with the General Medical Council. The appointed doctor accepts that they will perform duties in occasional emergencies and unforeseen circumstances at Consultant request, though juniors will not be required to undertake this work for prolonged periods on a regular basis. Coverage of the absence of colleagues on study and annual leave during the daytime is expected.

The annual leave entitlement is 27 days plus 8 bank holidays per annum, pro rata for contracts of less than 12 months.
