Exciting opportunity to work in the ophthalmic department in Wigan Eye Unit at Boston House and Leigh Infirmary. The unit sees patients with many ophthalmology conditions, including medical retina and glaucoma. You will carry out ophthalmic technical and imaging procedures, including OCT, visual fields and visual acuity assessments. Ophthalmic imaging experience is essential. You must be able to travel independently across the Trust.
Key Responsibilities
- Operate advanced ophthalmic imaging equipment to collect information to aid the diagnosis and management of sight‑threatening eye conditions.
- Liaise with the Lead Technician to ensure smooth and efficient running of the clinic.
- Maintain high levels of cleanliness and tidiness within the working environment following Trust, departmental and medical supplier policies.
- Undertake administration tasks as required to plan and work within schedules.
- Review patient records/referrals to determine the type of test required by doctors/clinicians.
- Follow protocols and patient pathways in relation to the Ophthalmic Imaging Service communications and key working relationships.
- Accurately assess the visual acuity of patients attending for ophthalmic imaging procedures.
- Instill dilating drops for retinal imaging and advise patients on drop effects, including precautions for daily living tasks such as driving.
- Perform ophthalmic imaging procedures such as visual field testing (automated and manual), retinal and ocular photography and biometry.
- Carry out manual and automated focusometry and hand‑neutralisation of glasses to ensure accurate visual field testing.
- Adjust camera settings and trouble‑shoot any camera or hardware issues before reporting problems according to Trust procedure.
- Assist with minor procedures and provide clear, concise instructions to patients to ensure maximum understanding and cooperation.
- Communicate with patients in difficult situations, showing understanding, respect and empathy.
- Provide reassurance, advice and comfort to all patients.
- Be competent in the use of computer software in retinal imaging and input patient and clinical information.
- Maintain accurate patient records in accordance with Trust and departmental policies.
- Maintain statistical requirements for ophthalmic imaging clinics.
- Access relevant information systems for communication and research (e.g. e‑mail, Internet).
- Be competent in the use of software systems (e.g. PAS, Zeiss, Heidelberg and IBEX) to enable smooth running of clinics and accurate patient care.
- Contribute towards ongoing development of the service and patient care.
- Follow all Trust and departmental policies and procedures.
- Take part in and be aware of directorate clinical governance, including clinical audit.
- Maintain up‑to‑date knowledge and attend relevant in‑house and external courses.
- Work shadow other related professionals to develop knowledge of diabetic‑related conditions and ocular diseases.
- Report any faults of capital or software equipment.
- Maintain equipment to full working standards and manage stock effectively.
- Ensure the security of own working areas and equipment.
- Implement departmental and Trust policies and procedures in own working area.
- Aid in training new starters by demonstrating workplace activities.
- Undertake annual personal development reviews.
- Participate in peer review.
- Fulfil a proactive role towards managing risk in all actions, including risk assessment, taking appropriate action and reporting incidents, near misses and hazards.

Zeiss Humphrey Visual Field Analyzer, Heidelberg Spectralis OCT/OCTA, Zeiss Clarus 700 Ultra Wide Field and Canon CX1 retinal cameras, Tomey TMS Corneal Topography and others.
