The School Nursing service is part of the Children’s Health services that provide community‑based services for children and young people aged 5‑19 years. The service works with stakeholders across a number of settings and organisations to lead delivery of the Healthy Child Programme 5‑19, improving child health outcomes and ensuring families at risk are identified early. The service is led by specialist school nurses and supported by a skill‑mix team, working across schools, homes, clinics, and community venues to deliver public health outcomes for children and families in Walsall.
Responsibilities
- Provide clinical leadership support and professional direction to the public health team, ensuring high standards and safe levels of intervention are delivered within a corporate caseload.
- Work autonomously within a multi‑agency arena to enable children and young people (predominantly pre‑school age) to reach their full potential physically, emotionally and socially through education and healthy lifestyles.
- Use public health knowledge and expertise to provide high‑quality, safe evidence‑based care and interventions to children, young people and their families.
- Work with partner agencies to identify and respond to the public health and wellbeing needs of children and young people within localities and borough‑wide areas, determining priorities for action and accounting for local and national priorities.
- Lead on designated aspects of the HCP 5‑19 and high‑impact areas, developing, planning, delivering and evaluating programmes of work in collaboration with health professionals and partner agencies.
- Contribute to child protection procedures, early help support and looked‑after children initiatives as an autonomous practitioner.
- Assess, plan, deliver and evaluate the health needs of specific groups of children, agreeing care plans with the child, young person and parents/carers to improve health and wellbeing.
- Develop, implement and evaluate Relationships Education, Relationships and Sex Education and Health Education pupils’ sessions for education settings.
- Develop, implement and evaluate health education and promotion sessions for parents and carers to support them in promoting their child’s health and wellbeing.
- Develop, implement and evaluate training packages for education staff and partner agency staff to support children and young people’s health and wellbeing.
- Effectively manage a caseload and, where appropriate, delegate care to non‑registrants while maintaining professional accountability for supervising that care.
- Promote team working at all times and act up in the absence of the clinical team leader; provide line management duties for junior staff within the locality team.
- Provide care in a variety of settings, including schools, clients’ homes, clinics and community venues.
- Develop, implement, monitor and evaluate quality standards with School Nursing Practice, utilising the clinical governance framework to support the provision of high‑quality, safe care.
- Provide pre‑ and post‑registration student nurses and staff requiring induction, mentorship and preceptorship with relevant and suitable experiences within the children, young people and families public health service.
