Phlebotomist | Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust

We have a 37.5 hour post available to recruit for in the phlebotomy department at Walsall Manor Hospital. The post holder will carry out phlebotomy (blood sample collection) in the inpatient wards, outpatients department and the antenatal clinic. We also cover two external sites for which you will receive training. The service runs Monday – Sunday and the post holder will participate in a 7‑day rota including bank holidays. This role is suitable for experienced phlebotomists or individuals who have completed phlebotomy training. Preference will be given to settled workers meeting the requirements. Non‑resident candidates may be considered where the role falls under a PhD‑level code and sponsorship can be obtained.

• Perform phlebotomy on patients in the inpatient, outpatient, antenatal and external sites as required.
• Provide and receive sensitive information from patients and their representatives, with a high degree of people skills including dealing with distressed or aggressive patients.
• Correctly identify patients and label blood samples accurately and safely.
• Exercise autonomy within professional boundaries and verify specimen collection from phlebotomy ward collection sheets.
• Work independently, with occasional guidance from the phlebotomy supervisor and manager.

• Determine the most appropriate type of phlebotomy service for each patient and perform the service safely.
• Maintain accurate clinical records and reports of phlebotomy operations.
• Collaborate with clinical staff to ensure timely investigations and treatments for adult patients.
• Maintain compliance with infection control and safety protocols.
• Participate in continuous professional development and on‑going training.

Applicants must have experience or training in phlebotomy and demonstrate the ability to work on own initiative under tight deadlines in a pressurised environment. Physical demands include walking, bending and handling medium loads over extended periods of time. The post holder will work a 7‑day rota, including bank holidays.
