An exciting opportunity has arisen to join us as a volunteer Special Constable. As a Special Constable you’ll be on the front line of policing, you’ll be one of the first faces that people see when they need us most. No two days will be the same. Some things you’ll be involved in are:
- responding to incidents and calls for help from the public
- speaking to victims of crime, making sure they get the best possible service
- recording and investigating crime
- making arrests
- interviewing suspects
- taking statements from witnesses
- searching for missing people
- giving evidence in court
- policing large public events, concerts and demonstrations
- dealing with road traffic collisions and offences
- carrying out proactive patrols to assist with problem solving
We ask that you volunteer for a minimum of 16 hours a month which could include weekends, public holidays and evenings. Interviews will be held at Police Headquarters in Carmarthen on 25th & 26th April 2026 and 15th & 18th May 2026. If successful at interview, you will be invited to attend fitness and biometric testing at Police Headquarters in Carmarthen on 8th May 2026 & 5th June 2026.
Dyfed Powys Police reserves the right to change the dates of tests or intakes as required and restrict candidate numbers attending the interviews due to organisational need.
Application guidance: You will be invited to complete the national sift as part of the process. Please note this needs to be completed within 7 days of your invitation or by the closing time/date of the advert whichever is the soonest. Please be mindful that if you fail the National sift online test, you are ineligible to complete it again within the next 3 months, and you can only complete it twice in a 12‑month period. This applies for any other uniformed recruitment (Police Officer, PCSO and Volunteer Police Officer/Special Constable). The online tests are not compatible with handheld devices e.g. tablet or mobile phone so must be completed on a desktop/Laptop computer. If you have any technical issues whilst completing the tests, then the decision to reset the test will be at the discretion of Dyfed Powys Police.
All prospective special constables will be required to have their fingerprints and a DNA sample taken. This is in accordance with police regulations. Successful candidates are subject to vetting and medical checks. Applications are being considered for our October 2026 intake.
Full training is provided, with a blend of face‑to‑face sessions, online learning and self‑study workbooks including a 6‑month weekend programme:
- Fridays 14:00-20:00
- Saturdays and Sundays 08:00-16:00

Once Curriculum and timetable complete, joining the Special Constabulary opens up a world of opportunities for personal and professional development.
