Salary: £27,560 - £31,304 per annum, Depending on Experience

Contract: Full time, FTC from June 2026 for 9 Months, 39 Hours per Week

Shifts: You will work a varied shift pattern which will include night work

About this job:

We are now recruiting for a number of Tram Driver Shunters to support the safe, efficient and compliant movement of trams within depots, sidings and authorised tramway areas. This is a safety-critical role requiring a strong safety focus, sound operational judgement, and the ability to work effectively in a live tramway environment.

As our Tram Driver Shunter you will:

  • Carry out safe and efficient shunting and non-passenger tram movements within depots, sidings, and authorised tramway sections.
  • Position trams accurately for service entry and exit, maintenance, inspection, cleaning, charging, and stabling.
  • Couple and uncouple tram vehicles where required.
  • Apply and release parking brakes, wheel scotches, and other securing devices correctly.
  • Manually operate tramway points and associated signalling or route-setting equipment.
  • Observe, interpret, and comply with tram signals, indicators, hand signals, and radio instructions.
  • Maintain safe working practices in shared operational environments, including areas with pedestrians, road traffic, Road Rail Vehicles, and other staff.
  • Communicate clearly with the Control Room, depot staff, rolling stock supervisors, and engineering teams using approved communication systems.
  • Report faults, defects, incidents, and near misses using designated reporting systems.
  • Stop operations and challenge unsafe acts where safety may be compromised.
  • Support depot operations, degraded service, and emergency situations when instructed.
  • Work rostered shift patterns including nights, weekends, and public holidays.

In order to be successful in this role you will need:

  • Experience with shunting or depot movements, operating points and route-setting equipment and working within similar safety critical roles.
  • Experience working within a tramway, light rail, or rail-based operational environment.
  • Strong understanding of safety-critical working practices and tramway operating procedures.
  • Medical fitness suitable for a safety-critical tramway role.
  • Excellent safety awareness, communication skills, and ability to follow operational instructions precisely.
  • Ability to remain calm, decisive, and professional under pressure.
  • Physically fit to work outdoors, around live infrastructure, and carry out manual handling tasks.
  • Flexible, reliable, punctual, and able to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Basic IT skills for system use and defect reporting.
